5 Carpet Cleaning Hacks You Should Try at Home

It’s springtime again, and for many, part of the season is cleaning out the house. Of course you want your home to be spotless. So let’s say that today you decide to get started with spring cleaning.

As you’re decluttering, vacuuming, and putting everything back in order, you notice the carpets. And indeed, they are filthy and disgusting. You’d then think carpet cleaning will take too long, so you decide to save it for later.

Turns out that “later” is just a few hours to sunset. It’s nearly the end of the day, but your carpet is still filthy as ever. You’d then wonder if there was an easier, faster way to get it done.

Fear not. Here are 5 carpet cleaning hacks that anyone can do at home.

  1. Make this homemade carpet deep cleaner

Deep cleaning is essential to remove all the dust mites and other allergens hiding under the fibres of your carpet. If you’re like most people, you’d opt for a commercial deep cleaner to load into your carpet shampooing machine, but there’s a better way.

Mix the following ingredients together:

  • 3/4 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide

  • 1/4 cup white vinegar

  • 2 tablespoons dish soap

  • 5 drops of essential oils

  • 2 tablespoons of fabric softener

  • 4 litres of hot water (not boiling)

Use this homemade deep-cleaning mixture with your carpet shampooing machine instead. Not only is it cheaper; it’s also a lot more environment-friendly.

  1. An iron to remove stains

After vacuuming, removing those leftover stains can be a really tough part of carpet cleaning. But not with an iron and this simple hack.

First, make a solution made of 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar. Dampen any stained areas on the carpet with this solution. Leave it for 5 minutes for the solution to work its way through.

Then, place a towel on top of the treated stain, then iron over it. The heat from the iron will transfer the stain from the carpet into the towel.

  1. Remove oil stains with baking soda

Oil stains are annoying to get out of a carpet. You can’t just dab it out with warm water. For this situation, baking soda is the solution.

Apply a generous amount of baking soda onto areas with oil stains, and leave it for a while. A dry crust will soon form, which can be vacuumed easily. You’ll be then left with a much lighter stain, which you can then dab out.

  1. Use a lint roller to remove remnants

Vacuuming can’t take out all of the gunk in a carpet. To remove what’s left, take a lint roller and put some elbow grease on it. Roll through the carpet, and in about 5 minutes any remaining gunk will be out of there.

  1. Baking soda and essential oils to freshen up

Of course you want your carpet to smell fresh. Deodorising should always be done in any carpet cleaning procedure. And it’s easy to make one at home.

Just take a typical 450-gram box of baking soda, and add in 10-20 drops of your favourite essential oil. Mix them well and store the mixture in a glass container. Then, just shake some onto your carpet, let it stay for 5 minutes, and vacuum. Your carpet would then be pleasant not just to the feet, but also to the nose.

Thanks to these carpet cleaning hacks, you finished just before the day ended. Now you have some time to spare to admire the sunset. And lots of time to prepare dinner.
